While Sunbathers Escaped Danger, Viral Image Shows Rescuer Sprinting ‘All Out’ In the Direction of the Location.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent local of Bondi, describes the famous coast as her personal space. On that fateful weekend evening, she, like many neighbors, detected loud noises reverberating across the neighbourhood.

“That was the initial assumption, but I considered it was daylight and there was nothing visible,” she explains. Exiting her apartment, she saw people “streaming up Bondi Road”. Their expressions she saw told her a crisis was unfolding.

While standing on the road, conversing with a duo who had run up the incline soaked, she became aware of someone approaching from behind. It was a lifeguard, sprinting towards Bondi unshod from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while holding a life-saving kit.

“I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I only caught a glimpse of this streak in blue,” she recounts. “He was zooming past. He was the only one heading in the opposite way that the crowd was trying to flee, while holding that big kit and unshod … He moved towards something that undoubtedly every instinct would instruct you to go in the reverse way.

“Just no hesitation, but just totally full throttle running.”

A Powerful Moment of Heroism During Tragedy

The image taken by Ching of the rescuer, later named as Jackson Doolan, quickly spread as one of many instances of valour in the following of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, a second lifeguard, explained that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to support the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to help emergency personnel, officers and ambulance crews treating many the injured.

Local Outpouring and Solidarity

Doolan’s account was part of a broader narrative to emerge from the community, with the lifeguard clubhouse beside the location of the violence transforming into a temporary treatment center. Accounts show that colleagues were also seen helping out, including going into the ocean to assist people needing help.

Following the attack, messages of gratitude were shared. One post shared thanks for the responders who exhibited that “goodness will always overcome hatred”.

The team of lifeguards issued a statement, explaining they were “still trying to comprehend what transpired”.

“We are grateful all for your thoughtful messages and encouragement. We are touched by the compassion directed at our team,” the team stated. “When ready, we will share our stories in the belief that it aids those affected.”

Council Commendation

Waverley council, the administrative organization that hires many permanent lifeguards, said that the crew acted heroically from the moment the shooting commenced through to late that night.

“People have shared so many powerful stories, but the viral photo of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help save lives is incredible,” commented a mayor.

“Our lifeguards demonstrate dedication every day in keeping our iconic beaches protected for the public, but what we saw on that day should be highly praised.

“While we mourn and come to terms with the atrocity of this violent and horrific tragedy, I think it is vital that we reflect on just how much light we have witnessed in the midst of such darkness.”
