The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
